INTEGRATING CAREER MANAGEMENT SKILLS IN THE CURRICULUM:
A CASE BASED APPROACH

Maria A Gee with Kevin Thompson

Welcome

Welcome to Sunshine Employment and Modern Showering. This is an educational resource aimed at careers advisers and academic staff interested in developing students' career management skills.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to key concepts and knowledge concerning management issues, problems and choices, and particularly the skill sets needed to address career management. The module requires students to describe and assess common problems, issues and choices for contemporary management; to demonstrate understanding of, and experience some of the skills needed, to address management problems; to critically evaluate some of the practices of management decision making in a business context; to evaluate in a personal and team context the skills needed to develop and manage a career in modern business organizations.

The website contains all the materials necessary to run a 10-credit module at UK Level 5. The module is particularly aimed at Business, Accounting and Management students, but could be adapted for other disciplines.

Only a 'taster' is available unless you register online. Once you have applied to register, and are approved, you will be given a unique log in ID and password. IDs and passwords will only be issued to staff at recognised Further and Higher Education establishments, so please provide your academic (not personal) email address.

Once you have registered, you will be able to see the materials for the full module, and also download the course materials for use under the terms of the Creative Commons Licence (copyright reserved if materials not used in accordance with the licences).

Included in the materials are CVs for sixteen candidates. These CVs have been updated for the 2009/10 presentation of the module. If you use any of this material, for subsequent years, you will need to update the CVs to ensure that

  1. the candidates do not ‘age’ over time and
  2. that they do not appear to have stayed in their last job for a long time or, alternatively, are left with an unexplained gap on their CVs from 2009/10 onwards.

Students have kindly provided me with some of the work they produced and this is also available directly from me if you request it using the email form in the downloads area.

N.B. Modern Showering and Sunshine Employment Consultants - are entirely fictitious and any resemblance to an existing or dissolved company is purely coincidental. In addition, the candidates and their CVs are entirely fictitious. Any references to educational institutions and employers should not be taken to imply that these fictitious candidates would be suitable for the courses of study and jobs outlined; the references to candidate history are purely for the purposes of a realistic scenario.
